the workhorse
nightmare metamorphosis
the house
structural evidence
The structure itself was created using a combination of raw materials and found architectural refuse. The installation was comprised of rooms on the first floor with an oak staircase ascending into a dense fog of curtains to illustrate the relationship was emotionally stunted. The furnishings in the home were modified to transport the viewer and performer into a hazy-dreamlike space.
The house was built as a replica of the drawing within the Boudoir Mirror. The decision to build the replica was inspired by forensic evidence gathering research conducted by miniatures artist Frances Glessner Lee. By recreating crime scenes with painstaking detail, Lee was able to prove ordinarily trivial details of spatial composition often reveal important details of a relationship. To model this theory, several locations within the drawing were marked with a drop of purple ring wax to pinpoint critical moments throughout the house. During the performance, the workhorse told the story by wearing and interacting with handmade objects that were representative of the events and their feelings from each marked location. This installation presented the space, events and objects as emotional evidence.
the objects
